Turf Valley extends 'lifesaving gesture' to Ellicott City's displaced merchants
Originally posted 9/14/16 in Baltimore Sun

Pete Mangione, whose family has owned and operated the Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City for the past 37 years, cannot imagine what it would be like to wake up and realize his business was gone.

So opening up five conference rooms at the resort to Main Street business owners abruptly displaced by the July 30 flash flood in Ellicott City was the least that his family could do, he said.

Ten merchants have taken up the offer and are selling their merchandise at "Main Street at Turf Valley" every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through the holidays.

Turf Valley Resort steps up to help Ellicott City businesses
Originally appeared 8/25/2016 on WBAL-TV Channel 11 News.

It has been a rough almost two months for many businesses in downtown Ellicott City, but now there's a lifeline of sorts from Turf Valley Resort.

The resort is creating a mini-bazaar inside its convention center, where some of those businesses can set up shop.
It may not look like much, but a stretch of conference rooms at the resort is slowly transforming into a portion of downtown.

On Thursday, 11 downtown merchants, who have been unable to reopen so far, set up shop after the resort made the overture.

Make Yourself at Home at Turf
Make Yourself at Home at Turf Valley Resort
Soon, Northern transplants like myself will be heading up the I-95 corridor on the way to their old stomping grounds in the Northeast or simply seeking cooler climes in the late spring or early summer. Maybe it will be a beach trip to Ocean City, Md., Rehobeth Beach, Del., or Long Beach Island, N.J., for example, or perhaps a trip to D.C. or Baltimore is on the slate?

Turf Valley is situated amidst the lush rolling hills and horse country of Maryland, just 20 minutes by car from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and approximately 45 minutes north of D.C. In addition to its prime location, I appreciated finding Turf Valley a bit of an oddity in this age of corporately owned and operated resort hotels.

Privately own by the Mangione family since 1978, the beginnings were a resurrected country club and special events facility that has blossomed into one of the area’s finest resorts boasting 172 guestrooms, including 70 suites, three buildings offering 26 spacious two- or three-bedroom, extended-stay villas, two 18-hole golf courses, a luxurious, full-service spa, indoor and outdoor pools, three tennis courts, a 24-hour fitness center, 40,000 square feet of meeting and event space and Alexandra’s restaurant.

Boy Scouts across the country have a new patch they'll be able to earn, and they can thank an Ellicott City scout for the idea.

Earlier this year, the Boy Scouts of America announced the Honor Guard patch - a new patch that recognizes scouts who participate in Color Guards and other similar programs for community service.

The patch was designed and proposed by Dennis Howser-Doty, 16, a Senior Patrol Leader with Troop 944 out of Ellicott City.

Howard County Will Again Welcome Soaring Inflation at Preakness Balloon Festival
Hot air balloons will take to the sky on Preakness week

Balloonmeister Ron Broderick is working on keeping a lot of balloons in the air. The West Friendship hot-air balloon pilot is organizing the Preakness Celebration Balloon Festival to be held at Turf Valley May 15 and 16, with an Armed Forces Day observance on Saturday, May 17.

"I'm responsible for all the balloons," he said.

Twenty hot air balloons are expected at the Preakness Festival, including his own rainbow-hued Dreamstar. Balloons are coming from as far as Savannah, Ga. Although most of the balloons are the traditional round or oval shape, this year an upside-down elephant named Pea-Nut will be joining in. Another balloon, Rickenbacker and Eddie, which looks like a regular balloon - with a World War II-era biplane flying through the middle of it - is coming for Armed Forces Day.

The restaurant underwent extensive renovations and, under the guidance of Executive Chef Russell Svoboda, overhauled its menu, switching to a cuisine called Modern American Fusion. We'll meet the many generations of the Mangione family who run Turf Valley and we'll get a taste of Chef Svoboda's twist on classic American cuisine. Then, we'll head to the kitchen of the Howard Community College Culinary Institute where the chef will show us how to create one of the restaurant's signature dishes.
