Turf Valley installs cellular repeaters throughout the property to boost wireless access

Ellicott City Maryland – October 11, 2010 - Mangione Enterprises LLC, owners of Turf Valley announced on Monday that the property has installed a comprehensive network of cellular repeaters, or wireless cellular signal boosters throughout the 1,000 acre compound. Repeaters are a type of bi-directional amplifier (BDA) commonly named in the wireless telecommunications industry, as a device used for boosting the cell phone reception to the local area by the usage of a reception antenna, a signal amplifier and an internal rebroadcast antenna. These are similar to the cellular broadcast towers used for broadcasting by the network providers, but are much smaller, usually intended for use in one or more buildings.

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Ellicott City Valley, the property had experienced spotty cellular service in some of its interior locations. "We listened to the feedback regarding poor signal strength from some of our guests and felt the need to address this," said Pete Mangione, owner and General Manager of Turf Valley. "The cellular repeater amplifiers rebroadcast the signals inside the buildings, which is then transmitted to a unit that amplifies the signal, and retransmits it locally, providing significantly improved signal strength for both cellular phone and 3G networking services."

The market for cellular repeaters is expected to grow rapidly over the coming years, particularly in the USA. This is due to the combination of the poor network coverage in some areas, and the large scale departure from the land-line system. The CTIA – The Wireless Association (formerly the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association) had predicted that by 2010 50% of phone users in the US would be mobile only - more than 80 million lines. This combined with the low population density (compared with Europe and Japan) means that many people will have to use some method to improve their home signal.

Other advantages of cellular repeaters include an increase in the cell phone's battery life and a lower level of radiation emitted by the handset - both caused by the lower power required to broadcast the signal to the local bi-directional amplifier, due to its proximity to the phone.

Turf Valley is a 1,000 acre property that boasts over 40,000 square feet of meeting and event space, 171 guestrooms and suites, 26 spacious two & three bedroom villas, 36 holes of championship golf, a luxurious spa, swimming pools, tennis courts and two restaurants.
