Proud to Be Green

When I was growing up, my elementary school would host an annual science fair, something I always enjoyed taking part in. One year my project was on acid rain. Another year it was a project about the composting pile I created in my backyard. Before I was ten years old, I was a member of Greenpeace and had attended Ornithological Camp (funny story for another time). Looking back now, I am not sure who planted the seed, but I've always had an interest in the environment and a love for our planet.

Fast forward a couple decades and I found myself working for a company with its own Environmental Commitment,

"As a family-owned and operated business it is very important for the Turf Valley staff and management to strive toward a better, greener Earth for ourselves, our children, our grandchildren and generations to come. Not only do we seek to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations, but also to instill an attitude of personal environmental responsibility through our green initiatives. We are honored to say that we are committed to upholding green practices throughout every aspect of our resort."

Simply put, Turf Valley Resort is proud to be green. Not only does that make the job of a salesperson easier, but it makes me extremely proud of where I work. Our website has a list of green and sustainable practices throughout the resort, but here are some of my favorites:

  • A solid food waste composting program in Alexandra's Restaurant and the Banquet Department (hello, science fair!)

  • Eco-friendly trash bins throughout the hotel and recycling receptacles in all guest rooms, meeting spaces and public areas

  • Certified member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses

  • LED lighting throughout all 40,000 sq. ft. of meeting spaces and 172 guest rooms

  • Member of the Maryland Green Registry

When hotels "go green" they do less damage to the environment, lower costs, and win goodwill from guests. Sustainability in the business world is essential to achieving growth and satisfying customers. It is now common for consumers seek out green businesses and pay more for eco-friendly products and services. A 2017 Booking.com study showed that 65% of global travelers seek out eco-friendly lodging options. There are great resources available as you plan an upcoming leisure or business trip and want to incorporate "green travel". Two examples are: Maryland Green Registry and TripAdvisor's GreenLeaders Program.

What green or sustainable practices are important to you? As a consumer, do you give preference to a business that is eco-friendly? I would love to know!
