We met in New York City on Hinge during Covid! We were engaged in Tours, France inside a cathedral. It wasn’t planned- Erik had been carrying the ring around waiting for a good moment. We were aimlessly walking around this small town waiting for our rental car to be ready and came across this insanely ornate Gothic church, “Cathedrale Saint-Gatien.” We were both gawking at it and decided to go in to see the inside. I had a dream the night before about my Nonna, who had passed away exactly a year ago, and it was my other grandmother's birthday. There was a little side area with the Statue of Mary and a bunch of candles lit, so we got the idea to light candles for our grandmothers. Since Erik was giving me his grandmothers ring, it clicked that this was the perfect moment. He had to whisper since we were in the church. It was perfect!

What made you choose Turf Valley Resort as your venue?

It’s the same place Julia’s parents were married, we’ve been to tons of weddings here and they have all been beautiful and fun, there was enough space to hold all of our guests!

The most memorable moments from our wedding day was looking at each other walking down the aisle, Father Leavitt’s homily and reading Erik’s letter!

Share your best advice for newly engaged couples.

Everything goes by so fast, try to slow down and take moments throughout your engagement and especially on your wedding day to pause and take mental screenshots so you can have every single memory possible!! Also while wedding planning - never forget what it’s all about. Always be grateful for the love and support surrounding you!

How do you approach creating a new dish or menu?

I start with the basics by sourcing the ingredients I’ll need for each dish. My focus is on what’s local and incorporating Maryland’s seasonal fare whenever possible. This time of year, options are more limited, but there are still plenty of ingredients to work with.

For example, when creating our Grilled Atlantic Salmon dish, I built the flavors around produce currently in season. The dish features butternut squash and brussels sprouts, which are local and at their peak right now in Maryland.

What are the key factors you consider when sourcing ingredients?

The key factor I consider is using local ingredients for the best quality. When I am unable to purchase items locally, I make sure to choose ethically sourced ingredients from suppliers we trust.

How do you ensure consistency in your dishes and food quality?

My preference is to keep dishes simple so the recipe can be repeated. When a dish is straightforward for the culinary team to execute, it ensures consistency, taste, and quality for every guest.

What is your signature dish on the new menu?

I have been influenced by French and Italian cuisine throughout my career. A signature dish I added to the menu this fall is Braised Short Rib Ragu, a nod to classic French cuisine with Mirepoix and touch of Italian influence as well.

When creating a new menu, how do you incorporate vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free dishes?

Dietary restrictions have become increasingly common and as Executive Chef I like to create dishes that meet those needs without sacrificing flavor. As with any dish, I rely on seasonal and freshly prepared ingredients to ensure the best possible flavor and quality.

We have new vegetarian dishes that include a Fig & Brie Pizza, Harvest Pappardelle Pasta with a housemade vodka sauce and a Panzanella Salad.

Tell us about the new menu and seasonal dishes that were added.

We are adding several sandwiches and handhelds to bring a more casual feel to our lunch menu. These additions will expand the variety, with options like Salmon BLT, Chicken Salad, Shrimp Salad, and a Bistro Steak Sandwich.

Our brisket sandwich will have a modern twist. It is called the Smoked Brisket Cubano and has a lighter feel with a mojo sauce which is a citrus and oregano blend. I think the highlight, though, will be the Hot Italian Sub, a classic that combines quality ingredients.

A Chimichurri Steak & Quinoa Bowl is a new entrée on the lunch menu with lots of great flavors.

For dinner, we are featuring appetizers such as Street Corn Arancini, a Deviled Egg Flight, and a Charcuterie Board. Steak Frites featuring sliced steak with a rosemary demi-glace and hand-cut fries is included in the menu. We also introduced a Pan-Seared Mahi Mahi filet — it is in season through the winter and locally sourced from North Carolina. It will be served with rice pilaf and lemon butter sauce. The Fall Panzanella Salad brings together great autumn flavors with dried cranberries, pepitas, and our house-made maple malt dressing and its vegetarian.

Turf Valley did a great job of helping us coordinate everything into a one-stop-shop solution. We were already married at a courthouse so we held our reception in Terrace on the Green and hosted our out of town guests in the hotel. The food was wonderful. We recommend attending their annual wedding expo and doing the tasting prior to making selections. A shout out to the bartender and waitstaff for having a great time while also keeping everything moving. Some memorable moments included the Father of the Bride dancing behind the bar with the bartender. In addition, Kayla taught her guests how to line dance to three different songs. Their guests had the opportunity to try out their skills later in the evening.  Overall, the reception was a great experience for everyone!

Anyone can catch your eye but only one will catch your heart Between high school and Facebook, Tony and I always seemed to be around each other but never connected until 2016 when we decided to throw caution to the wind. Casual conversations led to lunch dates, which led to dating. We both felt something was different with this relationship compared to our last but couldn't put our finger on it. It was like we had known each other for years. Too many times our strength was tested from health, to kids, to family, and each time we both realized we were in each other's corner, never once letting the other feel alone. With each passing year we grew closer and more in love with not only the person but their spirit, drive, and determination to be better. After dating for 6 years, Tony finally got up the nerve to pop the question and after the tears and the "are you sures" I finally said yes! The bond that we share knows no bounds. We have had our good times as well as our bad but we never lost sight of what is needed to keep a relationship strong.

What made you choose Turf Valley Resort as your venue?

I have driven past Turf Valley for years and always admired the water fountain. Tony and I knew we wanted an outdoor wedding with an amazing view. We went to a number of sites but instantly fell in love with the Willow Trees and the fountain at Turf Valley. Plus the staff was so nice and welcoming.

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

The most memorable moment of the wedding day was standing in front of our family and friends confessing our love to each other. We stared into each other's eyes and the world melted away. It was just the two of us in wedding bliss.

Share your best advice for newly engaged couples.

Take your time. We took two years before we walked down the aisle and it was the best thing we could have done. It allowed us to continue to learn about each other as well as take care of the financial obligation a little at a time.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses is designed to protect waterways and preserve native plants, animals and the local ecosystems. In 2019, Turf Valley's golf courses were designated as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary," by demonstrating environmental quality in areas such as Wildlife & Habitat Management, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation and Water Quality. Every three years, Turf Valley must complete the recertification process to demonstrate the ability to maintain a high degree of quality in all areas.

Jeff Roeder, Director of Grounds at Turf Valley, has played an integral role in Turf Valley achieving this important certification through upgrades to our irrigation system, grass variety selection and geofencing technology.  As Director of Grounds, Jeff is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of both golf courses as well as the main campus. Jeff manages a team of 30 employees in-season focused on horticulture and grounds maintenance.

Jeff shares his insight on the certification and process required to maintain this status.

Why is the Audubon certification important?

The Audubon certification matters for Turf Valley because golf courses often have a negative public image because of the upkeep required to maintain the course and the loss of habitat for animals and plants.

Being part of the Audubon was our decision; it is not a requirement and many golf courses don’t participate because of the work it takes to become certified and maintain it. We want to be stewards of the environment to show that we are doing our part to be environmentally friendly and ensure that the golf courses will be here for future generations.

Can you describe what happens during a site visit for recertification?

We’ve had two site visits since we became certified in 2019. The first recertification, a representative from Audubon came out to the property to check water quality, wildlife, habitat management areas and pesticide records to ensure accordance with all the requirements.

Our recent recertification required us to submit documentation including written reports and photo evidence for the past several years. It is a time-consuming process, but we understand the importance of maintaining and building upon our certification for the future.

What part of the certification is most important to you?

Our horticulturalist, Jason Keppley, has done an extraordinary job with the landscape and the attraction of the pollinators. As I look around, I am very proud of our ability to create naturalized areas that wildlife seeks out. It's very rewarding to come to work every single day and witness the improvements we have made.

Another extremely important area to me is water quality. Our data shows the entry level of pollutants coming into the property and when the water exits it is much cleaner. Having this data solidifies that we're doing the right thing by not allowing chemicals and fertilizers to enter the waterways which eventually lead into Chesapeake Bay, which is our main goal to protect.

What wildlife do you see on the property?

It is common for us to see bald eagles and ospreys almost every day. We also have deer, foxes, raccoons, coyotes, and an abundance of black squirrels, which are rare, and all have made Turf Valley their home.

Are there any future recommendations from Audubon that you are excited to implement over the next three years?

One of the categories I want to focus on is community outreach. It is the area we have spent the least amount of time on, and I believe the progress we have made in naturalizing the golf course has been phenomenal. We recently expanded our nature trail to incorporate trail markers and plant ID signs. The end of the trail is our “Monarchs in the Rough” pollinator habitat which is a program established by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP) to create habitats for endangered monarch butterflies to pollinate and shelter in out-of-play areas.

We communicate with our members on a regular basis to share recent developments and we plan to involve them in new projects that revolve around wildlife and naturalization. Our team has evolved from cutting grass and fertilizing to focusing on areas that will continue to make the golf course sustainable for years to come.

If you could take on one dream project to improve sustainability, what would it be?

I have two that I would be excited to implement. The first one would be a stream restoration throughout the entire property. We have a lot of meandering creeks that have gotten bigger over the years, so I would stabilize some of the creek banks, and consider stocking the ponds and creeks with fish, trout, primarily.  

Another dream project that we are moving forward with in some areas is the grass conversion of our fairways to bermudagrass. The most recent project on the Hialeah involved replacing approximately 2.5 acres of cool season turf with bermudagrass.  Over the past two seasons we have converted nearly 6 acres to warm season turf.  The bermudagrass thrives in this climate and requires less pesticide use and water to maintain.

We wanted a venue that offered a beautiful backdrop for our ceremony, amazing food choices (the Hors d'oeuvres/Tiber package was just what we were looking for), on site accommodations, and was pet friendly so our dog could also be a part of our special day. We loved having our Welcome Party/Rehearsal dinner at Alexandra's! Our guests continue to rave about how amazing the food was at the Wedding!

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

It's so hard to just pick one, but getting to spend time on the beautiful grounds and taking amazing first look photos was certainly a highlight. The Terrace on the Green was perfect for dancing the rest of the night away!

• You can utilize an AI travel assistant like Layla, available on platforms like Booking.com, Tripadvisor, and Skyscanner. Travel assistants offer real-time trip adjustments as well as personalized recommendations.
• For beginners like me, I’d recommend starting out with a platform like ChatGPT, or even the AI features available within travel apps like Expedia.

AI tools are a wonderful resource for everything from researching a destination and booking travel, to creating a travel itinerary or translating a menu in a foreign language. By using AI effectively and combining it with your own research (always double-check your work before committing to a plan!), you can truly create a memorable and personalized travel experience!

If you’re looking ahead to summer vacation, a weekend getaway, or even a staycation, I encourage you to consider trying out AI. Here’s some advice and a few tips to help you on your way:

Use AI for planning:

• Inspiration: discover unique experiences and hidden gems in your destination
• Detailed Search: AI answers complex questions and provides detailed and specific recommendations
• Budgeting: compare prices, finding the best deals on airfare, hotels and activities
• Plan Your Route: Taking into account factors like distance, method of transportation and even layover times, AI will assist you in finding optimal routes.
• Packing: create packing lists based on your destination and the activities planned

Tips for using AI:

• Incorporate detail: the more, the better. Be sure to mention things like dietary restrictions, special interests, and any special needs of your traveling companions
• Be specific: clearly communicate preferences and travel goals. For example, instead of “what should I do in Antigua?”, ask “What are the best activities for honeymooners in Antigua in September?”
• Consider your interests: Let’s say you’re a foodie. I entered the following in ChatGPT: “find the best food tours in Napa that include wine tastings”. In seconds I was presented with five food & wine tour companies, along with highlights, duration of tour, pricing, and a “why choose this” section for each!

All of this is to say…give it a try! Using AI for travel planning offers such great benefits, including enhanced efficiency, time savings, and personalization. Use it a little or commit all the way and plan your entire trip – but make sure you’re benefiting from this amazing technology at your fingertips!

The food was perfect and the mason jar desserts and late night mashed potato bar were huge hits with everyone. The photo booth was excellent and we picked them from Turf Valley's preferred vendor list. It was all around an absolutely pleasurable experience and all of the staff were incredibly attentive, accommodating and professional. The most memorable moments from our wedding day were our first look at the ceremony, the speeches and dancing. We kicked off our adventure right here at Turf Valley Resort, greeting the group with a light lunch. Set on 1,000 acres of Central Maryland beauty, this former horse farm is now a full-service retreat with championship golf courses, a European spa, a sparkling outdoor pool, and more than 40,000 square feet of meeting and event space —making it the perfect place to relax, celebrate, or host your next big event.

Next, we visited Clark’s Elioak Farm, a family-owned gem that's been part of Howard County’s story for over 225 years. Owner Martha Clark and her grandson gave us a personal tour, and cuddling baby goats was a clear highlight! The farm is full of charm, with a petting zoo, pony rides, a magical fairy forest, and restored pieces from the beloved Enchanted Forest theme park. Whether you’re making new memories or reliving old ones, this farm brings out the kid in everyone.

A few country roads later, we arrived at Mary’s Land Farm, where owner Thomas Cunningham gave us a tour of this peaceful, 160-acre escape. Focused on regenerative farming and quality food, the farm offers a welcoming store, beautiful grounds, and plenty to explore. Guests can book private animal encounters, attend workshops, or even stay overnight at their bed and breakfast. Mary’s Land Farm invites you to slow down, connect with the land, and each other.

Our afternoon turned delicious at Clarksville Commons and The Common Kitchen! Anastasia MacDonald, Director of Community Relations, led us through this eco-friendly, mixed-use center. With solar panels, green roofs, and water conservation woven into its design, Clarksville Commons proves that sustainability and style go hand-in-hand. At The Common Kitchen, General Manager Leigha Steele introduced us to the incredible local food entrepreneurs dishing up global flavors—all under one lively roof.

Next, we rolled into K9 and Coffee, a cozy café-meets-dog-park in Glenelg where owner Kelvin Abrams greeted us with a smile. Guests can sip fair trade coffee from Orinoco Coffee & Tea, unwind with a craft cocktail, and let their pups play leash-free just steps away. With a laid-back vibe and even a bourbon club for the regulars, it’s a true neighborhood hangout for humans and their best friends.

We ended the day on a sweet note at Penn Oaks Winery, a family-run vineyard tucked into the hills of Cooksville. Owner Jan Luigard, who first fell in love with winemaking while living in Germany, crafts award-winning wines in the old-world Riesling tradition. Between the beautiful setting and handcrafted tastings, it was the perfect way to toast a day of discovery.

This outing was just a glimpse of all Howard County has to offer—and we’re so glad to be part of such a vibrant and welcoming community. What made you choose Turf Valley Resort as your venue?

We loved that there was so much to do at Turf Valley Resort, from the restaurant to golf to the spa. Our wedding felt like an entire weekend event, instead of just a one evening party. Most of our guests stayed on site and we were able to mingle with them easily on Friday before and Sunday after the wedding. All of the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and easy to work with during the planning and execution of the wedding. Also, all the guests raved about the delicious food, cooked perfectly for 200 people! From our first tour of the venue last May, we knew that we were in amazing and experienced hands with Jenny and Jianna!

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

Our favorite part was the intimate vows we did with our wedding party and close friends and family during the first look. However, the ceremony in the Cameo Ballroom and reception after was an event of our lifetime. We loved having the Cameo space to entertain our guests throughout the ballroom, lobby, and outside patio. We had amazing photographers and an incredible DJ that kept our guests on the dance floor all night! The entire day was incredibly memorable!

Did you have any wedding must-haves that had to be part of your special day?

We wanted to celebrate us with all our friends and family. Having amazing and personable vendors was our priority. We made sure we did thorough interviews with our DJ, photographers, and venue (Turf Valley!) to ensure all our guests would have the best time possible! The Turf Valley team was very easy to communicate with and made sure everything was stress free and smooth on our big day. An open bar was also a must for us and our friends and family!

As an Audubon Certified Golf Course since 2019, we follow a structured approach to environmental stewardship through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. This certification recognizes our ongoing efforts to enhance wildlife habitats, conserve natural resources, and implement sustainable land management practices. Some of the ways we’re making a difference include:

• Supporting Pollinators – Our participation in the Monarchs in the Rough program provides critical habitats for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators by planting native wildflowers and grasses throughout the course.

What made you choose Turf Valley Resort as your venue?

We wanted a venue with beautiful exterior and interior spaces, an all-inclusive wedding package, and a supportive staff. Turf Valley was perfect for us! The coordinators were so helpful and responsive. The food and bar packages were exactly what we wanted. And we were able to customize the space to accommodate everything we wanted on our day.

Although it rained on our wedding day, we found so many unique ways to get photographs outside at Turf Valley. Our pictures turned out so great! Also, we got SO many compliments on the food and how perfectly everything went throughout the day.

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

We had a packed dance floor from start to finish. Dancing at the end of the night with all of our friends and family surrounding us was so special and memorable.

Did you have any wedding must-haves that had to be part of your special day?

We wanted to have a fun atmosphere with good food and drinks! So an open bar (with many options) and space for a photo booth and Italian cookie table were important to us!

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

One of the highlights of our wedding day was our first dance; it felt magical to share that intimate moment with each other in such a gorgeous ballroom. My blog coincides with “World Mental Health Day”, recognized on Thursday, October 10^th. If you know me, you know there are few causes more near and dear to my heart. World Mental Health Day is a time to celebrate global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. In honor, I want to share warning signs, as well as tips to avoid the burnout associated with frequent business travel.

While doing research, I found a Kingston Study that surveyed 200 frequent business travelers. 45% of those surveyed reported higher stress levels than normal while on business trips. 31% experienced emotional exhaustion on a weekly basis–a major risk factor of burnout. A recent Simpila Business Travel & Mental Health Survey reported 80% of those surveyed have experienced mental health problems, including stress, and have not told their employer.

Travel burnout isn’t always easy to identify until it’s too late. Despite its allure, travel can be exhausting (and I’m not just talking about different time zones). I scoured the World Wide Web to provide potential warning signs of burnout, and tips to avoid it.
 

Warning Signs of Travel Burnout:

• Loneliness
• An overwhelming feeling of being homesick
• Diminishing or inconsistent results at work
• Insomnia
• Extreme tiredness/exhaustion
• Stress: drinking too much, not exercising, distracted eating
• Lack of boundaries with your work hours
• A general “off” feeling - not feeling like yourself
• Physical symptoms: GI pain, dizziness, chest pain, headaches
• A serious case of the “over-its”: you’re over figuring out where to go, where to eat, how to get places, talking to locals, making decisions

Tips & Tricks:

• Practice mindfulness
• Get organized. Plan ahead.
• Connect with nature
• Make time for exercise
• Eat nutritious meals: a well-balanced diet can do wonders to combat fatigue.
  • Pro Tip: Consume food with a higher water content (fruits & vegetables) as well as lots of pure water before, during and at least 24-hours after your trip.
• Seek support: look to your family, friends and co-workers for their support
• Look at your options: talk to your boss and share your concerns of exhaustion and possible burnout
• Disconnect: ideally, the emails and social media can wait. Unplug. Decompress with a book or a favorite movie.

An all-encompassing piece of advice and one of my favorites: BE KIND TO YOURSELF: Listen to your body, practice self-care, advocate for yourself, and when you’re not feeling on top of your “A Game”, do what you can to take a break. There are an overwhelming number of benefits of travel. Like anything in life, it’s about finding a balance. Consider this your survival guide and let me know if I’ve missed anything you practice in your daily life in order to avoid general burnout and exhaustion. What made you choose Turf Valley Resort as your venue?

We were looking for a beautiful resort in Maryland with picturesque grounds that could provide an all inclusive package. The all inclusive package that Turf Valley provided is unbeatable and the food, bar and signature drink options were a hit with our guests. I loved the free night stay for us on our wedding night and for our future anniversary.

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

My most memorable moment was the Turf Valley wedding staff. From beginning to end the communication was great and the team was very responsive. Jenny and Jianna made sure all my questions were answered and that the lead up to the big day remained stress free. My Turf Valley day of coordinator Chris Goodwin was AMAZING!!!!! As the groom and I were walking down the aisle after the ceremony, I saw Chris holding a signature drink for us. This just summarizes the level of excellent customer service that Chris provided all night. He was our personal server during dinner and was always available for anything we needed. If I had to pick one thing that I loved about Turf Valley, I would say it is the outdoor ceremony space. The background and all the greenery was so beautiful. There was no need for additional decoration because the space was lovely as is.

Did you have any wedding must-haves that had to be part of your special day?

The golf cart!!!! The staff provided a golf cart to get the wedding party close to the fountain for some amazing pictures.

But there is a very important group most people forget --the housekeeping staff.

The housekeeping department can make or break a guest’s experience as they are responsible for creating and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment. This team performs the “invisible tasks” many guests overlook unless something goes awry.

This month I sat down with Housekeeping Director, Kim Anderson, to understand the role her team plays in the success of our resort and maybe even learn a few tips along the way.

You were recently promoted to Housekeeping Director. What are the responsibilities of a Housekeeping Director at a resort?

As a director, I oversee a staff of 30+ employees but it’s more like overseeing 5 departments in one! We are responsible for the cleanliness of all public spaces and guest rooms at Turf Valley.  I manage scheduling, training, ordering supplies and much more. Every day is a little different and can be unpredictable –a big part of my job is putting out fires and mentoring my team. I run my department with the motto “A first impression is the last impression."  

How did you get your start in the industry?

I worked in many different industries before starting my career at TVR, but I always knew I didn’t want a job sitting behind a desk. I attended a career development class that took place at Turf Valley – I was fascinated with the inner workings of the resort and the glass elevators really caught my eye, I applied for a job that day.

I worked my way up the ladder. I started as an attendant cleaning guestrooms, then a supervisor responsible for inspecting the rooms, eventually becoming a manager and finally, a director.

Kim, you’ve been with Turf Valley for 35 years. What keeps you here?

The people and the long-lasting relationships. So many of my team members have been here for over 10 years, so you grow together. It really feels like a family here.

Do you have a favorite memory at Turf Valley you want to share?

My daughter was married at Turf Valley about 7 years ago. Everyone did an amazing job, and we were so happy with the experience. 

What do you wish more people knew about your department?

The pride we take in our roles here and just how hard we work. With my team, I often speak about looking at things from our guest’s perspective and how the little details are so important to the success of the resort. We understand that the guest ‘s experience starts as soon as they walk through the front doors, so we strive for perfection every day.

What is your favorite part of your day?

Being able to encourage and spend time with my team. I love being there at the end of the day to thank each one for their dedication.

Lastly, are there any cleaning tips you can share with us common folk?

Wipe down your counters with a dry cloth after cleaning them. This will help prevent streaks and smudges. Also, learning how to properly fold linens such as a fitted sheet will save you lots of space your closets!

The Number Nine Trolley Line Trail offers a gentle walk along a paved path, making it an ideal choice for all ages and abilities. The trail winds through the scenic Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum, a 126.6-acre site dedicated to the life of Benjamin Banneker, one of America’s first African-American scientists.

If you’re up for a bit more adventure, you can venture off the pavement into the woods on the Red Trail (1.3 miles) or take the Yellow Trail (.4 miles) that connects to the Orchard Trail, Story Book Trail, and Pollinator Garden.

Make it a day: This historic trail is conveniently located in Old Ellicott City making it the perfect addition to a trip into town for shopping and lunch! Visit Old Ellicott City to plan your visit.

2. McKeldin Rapids Trail

Accessibility: Easy/Moderate with a tricky boulder section
Dog-Friendly: Yes, on leash

The McKeldin Rapids Trail is a short but picturesque hike along the Patapsco River. It’s relatively flat, except for one tricky section with a large boulder that may give some visitors a challenge. The trail begins with a descent down some stairs to a peaceful view of the rapids. You might even catch a glimpse of a Great Blue Heron fishing in the river.

Although swimming is prohibited in the rapids due to dangerous conditions, if you continue along the trail, you'll find areas where visitors often swim or tube in calmer waters. The trail ends at the junction of the Switchback Trail, making it easy to extend your hike for a longer adventure.

Explore More: The McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park offers additional trails like the Tall Poplar, Plantation, and Medicine Tree Trails. The park is rich in history and features multiple recreational amenities, including a disc golf course, playgrounds, and picnic pavilions.

The Buzzards Rock Trail offers a mix of terrain, from paved paths to rocky ridges and even a tunnel. At the Buzzards Rock Overlook, you can enjoy a view of the Patapsco Valley River peeking through the foliage.

At the tunnel you will access the Grist Mill Trail, where you can choose to extend your hike. If you’re up for more exploration, take the Swinging Bridge at Orange Grove to the Cascade Falls Loop Trail. This popular 2.3-mile loop features a charming waterfall where you can cool off on a hot day.

Note: There is no entrance fee at the Buzzards Rock Trailhead starting near S. Hilltop Rd, but if you access the trail from the Orange Grove parking lot, the standard Patapsco Valley Park entrance fees apply.

Centennial Lake Loop is an easy, paved trail that circles a beautiful 54-acre man-made lake within the 337-acre Centennial Park. It’s perfect for a relaxed walk, a jog, or even a bike ride, and the whole trail is easy and accessible. The park itself is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a range of amenities including sports fields, pavilions, concessions, and restrooms. Your pup isn’t forgotten, with water fountains along the trail that have dog bowls attached!

For those looking to get out on the water, Adventure Shack Rentals provides kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, and fishing boats from 11 AM to 7 PM, Wednesday through Sunday. What made you choose Turf Valley Resort as your venue?

Austin’s sister and brother-in-law got married at Turf Valley in June of 2018, so we had some special family ties! It was also the first time Jenna got to meet a lot of Austin’s extended friends & family so there are a lot of fond memories of Turf Valley for both of us. When it came time to choose our venue, we knew it would be the one!

Our wedding day at Turf Valley was amazing! The venue was the perfect place for our friends and family who traveled from near and far to keep everyone in a central spot. We recently celebrated our first anniversary by golfing on one of the courses on site and by staying at the hotel that night. Spending time there brought back so many amazing memories from our special day!

As the popularity of golf grows, golf outings are a great way to raise money for charity while enjoying a day on the greens. Planning a golf outing may seem like a daunting task but these tips can help simplify the planning process.

Determine your Budget

There are many costs to consider that can be make-or-break moments for your fundraising goals. Most of your budget will be allotted to the golf course that will host the event, which typically covers the greens fees associated with caring for the golf course, as well as the cart rental fee, which will allow your players to complete their round of golf in a timely manner. Determine what will be included in the ticket price, such as food, refreshments, parking or any other additional costs. Set a portion of your budget aside to promote your event and consider the number of staff and/or volunteers to manage logistics on the day of the event.

Understand your Mission

It can be easy to lose yourself in an event with coordinating details, budgeting, and miscellaneous tasks. Before you get too far in the planning process, be sure to have a mission statement of your own, to keep you grounded and focused. Raising money for a charity is fun and exciting but dig deep into the meaning behind the charity and remember that is why you are doing this! If you happen to be hosting to honor someone who has passed, this is a meaningful way of paying tribute to their memory, or even raising money for a notable cause.

Choose Your Golf Course

Narrow your list of potential golf courses that can host the event based on the number of players you anticipate. Reach out to inquire about the cost to hold the golf tournament and what is included in the price. This will help determine your ticket pricing strategy, which should cover the round of golf and food while keeping the cost reasonable for attendees.

When hosting a golf tournament, thinking about the itinerary will be important when you are considering the food and beverage portion of the day. What time will your event start? If you offer a shotgun start, meaning that all players are teeing off at the same time, do you want them to eat before playing golf, during, or after? Or maybe you want all three? This is an important thing to consider before selecting your course, based on the catering options offered on-site. Other factors to consider are the location of the golf course, its accessibility to major highways and adequate parking for guests.

Lock Down Sponsors

Finding sponsors for your golf tournament will be the key to its fundraising success. The ticket price will cover the round of golf, food and not much more, so sponsorship opportunities will make up most of the donations. Provide varying levels of sponsorship to encourage businesses of all sizes to take part.  Think local and identify businesses that are centrally located around the golf course who may be interested in advertising their services.

Once you have gathered a list, work on your sales pitch that highlights the sponsorship opportunities from signage, golf cart advertising or sponsoring a hole. Share the number of golfers you expect to attend and the importance of the cause you are supporting. Creating event programs to be distributed, sponsor signage at registration and throughout the course, and slideshows displayed during cocktail hour are additional ways to add value to your sponsorship packages.

Make it Fun!

Get people excited about the event with an effective marketing plan and create a simple sign-up process that can be completed online. Offer unique skill challenges such as the longest drive or closet to the pin. Provide plenty of refreshments and food that hits the spot at the right time. Signature drinks can add fun to the event or a personalized token for each guest to make the day memorable. Customize your tournament with a takeaway item such as a golf shirt, hat, backpack, custom golf balls, tees, or anything to create a memory and lasting impression beyond the day of the tournament!

How do you start playing the golf tournament?

There are essentially two ways to start the actual golfing portion of your tournament. First, you can have standard “Tee Times,” which would be staggered every 8 minutes for your players to start golfing. Second, which is arguably more fun, is a “Shotgun Start.” In this instance, all golf carts are lined up and waiting to begin the tournament. Each player is in their cart when the bell chimes, and all players drive to their assigned holes to start playing! This is fun, interactive and memorable to all involved, and certainly makes for a good photo opportunity! It also allows all players to start AND end playing at the same time. On average, playing a round of golf can take between 3-5 hours, depending on the experience of the player.

Golf Outings at Turf Valley Resort

In 2023, Turf Valley Resort hosted 45 golf outings starting in April through October. Though Turf Valley Resort’s golf courses are private, non-members may host a golf outing on one of our two 18-hole championship golf courses. We help plan your event and provide all set up the day of the event. In addition to the golf course, we offer climate-controlled rooms and catering to accommodate groups of all sizes.

One of our largest golf tournaments we host in addition to being a sponsor is the Annual Italian Invitational. Recently held on July 15th, 2024, the tournament was comprised of 260 players (or 65 foursomes!) The Title Sponsors, the highest sponsor level, were Strayer Contracting, International Union of Elevator Contractors, Maryland Health Enterprises, and Turf Valley Resort.

2024 marked the 40th Anniversary of the Italian Invitational, first started by Nick Mangione in 1984, to pay tribute to his late cousin, Fred Grimmel, Jr. and his family’s Italian heritage in support of his alma mater, Loyola University of Maryland with an Annual Scholarship Fund.

What made you choose Turf Valley Resort as your venue?

We chose Turf Valley because of the convenience of being able to have the ceremony and reception in one location. As soon as we saw the Waterford Ballroom with the windows and the outdoor fountain, it became our top choice. It was a truly great day! All of our guests agreed the food, service, cocktails and staff of Turf Valley were so hospitable. They made the day special.

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

The most memorable moment was as the Wedding March played, having the doors open and walking down the aisle and seeing my husband's beautiful face. It was also a "paparazzi'" moment, as cell phones were recording and photographing me coming in and my husband standing at the altar.

Did you have any wedding must-haves that had to be part of your special day?

We wanted to have something fun for the guests, so that's why Focus Pocus Photo booth was so great. The vendors had props and you could text the photos immediately to yourself upon completion. There was a lot of dancing and laughing, which made for a fun night.

While it’s far from a “hidden” gem at this point (the spa can book-up weeks and even months in advance), I’d have to say that The Spa at Turf Valley is one of our sweetest offerings! With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to do a Q+A with Krystal Kroll, Spa Director. Krystal has been at the helm for ten years, which in my opinion, makes her the leading authority on all things relaxing and indulgent! Let’s do a deep dive with Krystal and get the low down on The Spa at Turf Valley!

    Tell us about the services & treatments offered at The Spa?

     We are a day spa that offers an array of massages, facials and body treatments. Our day packages are the most popular, allowing guests to spend the day receiving multiple treatments, as well as lunch. We also offer overnight packages that include a hotel stay, spa treatments, deluxe amenities, and meals. As a spa guest, you are welcome to use our pools, fitness center and dry sauna.

    What is currently the most popular spa service?

   Anything Seasonal! Our clients love our Seasonal Limited Edition treatments.

    Do trends come and go in the spa industry? If so, how do you keep your finger on the pulse of what new offerings are available and what your customers are looking for?

   Spa trends do tend to come and go just like with fashion! We like to offer what’s trending, in addition to freshening up our existing offerings with new enhancements. I am always researching what is new and exciting. Talking to industry peers and using social media and different platforms helps me discover what the latest trends are. Although trends are always fun, nothing compares to a classic full body massage, customized facial or exfoliating body scrub.

 What do you think sets The Spa apart from competition?

  What sets us apart from other spas is our Vichy Shower. It is a one-of-a-kind spa treatment that has guests traveling from all over to experience! The Vichy Shower starts with a full body scrub or wrap, followed by a rinse with seven overhead showers. The rainfall effect instantly relaxes you as water jets offer a hydromassage, rinsing away any product. The entire treatment is done by a technician, so there’s no getting up to jump into a shower to rinse off!

  What would you consider the best part of your job as Spa Director?

   The best part of my role is the ability to be creative! From designing the spa space to creating treatments, I can let that side of me shine! I also love seeing how relaxed and happy guests are after a day here. It makes all the hard work worth it!

 You’ve been in your role for almost 10 years which is very impressive! What about the rest of your team of massage therapists and estheticians?

  Most of the staff here are what I like to call “lifers”, they remain committed to The Spa for many years! We just recently celebrated the retirement of Sun, an Esthetician who was here for 25 years! Kristin, one of our Massage Therapists just had her 20th work anniversary in June. We have many other staff members who have been here for quite some time, including massage therapists Theresa and Leslie who have been at the spa for 14 and 16 years, respectively.

  Let’s talk about the guest experience. Can you provide us with any best practices or tips?

  The Spa at Turf Valley books out weeks in advance! If you are planning something like a birthday celebration, girls’ retreat, or any other type of event and you have a preferred date in mind, be sure to call us as soon as possible in order to lock in the day. Group spa outings are very popular right now. Give us a few dates that would work for your group to ensure that we can get you scheduled.

  How can readers maximize their spa experience?

  To maximize your experience, make sure you plan accordingly in order to arrive early to your appointment. No one wants to feel stressed trying to make sure they arrive on time in order to enjoy their services. Arriving early will allow you to change into a spa robe and slippers and relax with a cup of hot herbal tea in our Serenity room prior to your spa treatments.

What made you choose Turf Valley Resort as your venue?

My family and I have been coming to Turf Valley for years to celebrate special events and my parents also had their wedding reception at Turf Valley.

Everyone that attended our wedding has said how much they enjoyed the wedding. They raved about the delicious food and how the staff members were so nice and accommodating. The bridesmaids and I enjoyed getting ready in the hospitality suite which was beautifully decorated for the season. My guests and I enjoyed the decor around the resort and it made our photos magical.

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

I have several memorable moments from our wedding day. The first one was doing the first look. I enjoyed seeing my husband looking so handsome in his tux. The second one was having our first dance. This was just a beautiful dance. The last one was spending time with my family and friends at the reception. For my husband, his memorable moment was the cocktail hour. He enjoyed eating the food he picked for cocktail hour.

Firstly, what is a mentorship program?

A mentorship program is a structured initiative that facilitates the pairing of experienced individuals (mentors) with less experienced ones (mentees) to provide guidance, support, and knowledge transfer.

Mentorship is nothing new. The earliest written mention of the concept can be found in Homer’s Odyssey. When the poem’s hero, Odysseus leaves to fight in the Trojan war, he places his friend “mentor” in charge of his son. In modern times, a mentor often refers to someone who is a “guide or educator” and began gaining popularity in the corporate world in the 1970s.

Why should you establish a mentorship program?

Statistics show there is a significant value in having a mentorship program. A 2019 survey by CNBC and SurveyMonkey reports 40% of employees without a mentor considered quitting their jobs.  ​

On the other side of the coin, the Harvard Business Review study shows 75% of executives credit their success to mentors and 90% of employees with a career mentor are happy at work.

Data shows mentorship can be critical to the long-term success of a company by improving retention, building connectivity and knowledge sharing in addition to increasing employee diversity and representation.

Where to start?

Understand the problems you are trying to address by establishing this program. Define what success looks like for participants and your organization.

Design your program by establishing guidelines. Create a successful program by making key elements clear to participants:

• How will participants enroll (open vs invitation only)?
• Will the mentorship program be one on one, project-based or group based?
• How often and where will mentors and mentees meet?
• How will the organization track success and receive important feedback?

Promote the program and gather useful details. To successfully match mentors and mentees, you will need to know their key skill sets, professional backgrounds, and strengths/weaknesses. Creating a questionnaire and holding interviews is a crucial step. Be sure to ask both the mentor and mentee what they are hoping to gain from participation in the program. Understanding what participants hope to achieve will help with the most challenging part of establishing a mentorship program, pairing the mentor and mentee. Various backgrounds, learning styles and different needs all come into play – you will want to carefully examine the questionnaires and interview notes to match individuals. A popular suggestion is to allow mentors and mentees a choice of 2-3 candidates so that they have a “sense of ownership” in the selection process.

Establishing Common Goals

A mentorship program can be a highly effective tool in your corporate arsenal, but it is a significant time investment. There are many ways to learn from a mentor, such as role plays, providing constructive feedback, learning new skills, and other face-to-face interactions. To ensure your program is effective, develop a plan for measuring its impact. Make sure you understand the goals of your program and create an environment that encourages honest feedback.

Meet with participants regularly to see if the program is helping them reach their primary objectives. If they share common goals, both parties will benefit. Mentees will gain valuable skills and knowledge that will help them succeed in the future, while mentors will benefit from giving back to their employer and building upon their personal and professional growth.
